The Sound of Silence
As the clock struck at the midnight hour on Friday,23rd May, history was created as Namma Bengaluru's International Airport finally took wings . It was a dream come true for the Bangaloreans already suffering from ailing infrastructure. While many people were happy about it and celebrated as Bangalore got its on World Class Airport, i had my own reasons to celebrate and mourn. On Saturday, when i got up in the morning the first thing i did was to go to my apartment's rooftop. Standing from there i had bade 'tata' to innumerable flights with their engines making deafening noise, and that Saturday morning the only sound that i could hear was the 'Sound of Silence'.The runway looked like a widow who till yesterday was reining in the admirations for her beauty and today by virtue of fate was mourning the loss and the vacuum created by the sudden loss.
I decided to take a ride to the now 'Old Airport'. What i saw at the 'Departures' terminal was shocking. The Cafe Coffee Day, the 24X7 Bageecha Restaurant, the Chai and Cigarettes shops , the Juice Corner had all not just closed, the shopkeepers had not ever bothered to pull down the shutters of the prevous 'Nerve Centers' of the buzzing life of the 'Old' airport. The glamorous Air hostesses were all gone, the deadly traffic was no more, and what was missing the most from the scene was the eager and waiting faces of friends and relatives of the travelers.
However, the good thing is that the traffic on the Airport Road has reduced drastically. The Times of India had reported that around 10,000 vehicles would be reduced from the Airport Road and traffic would be eased out. Well, i can't comment on the numbers but yes the traffic has really come down, and yes there are no more screeching sound of the plane engines. On one hand the 'Change' is good and peaceful but on the other hand it has snatched away a place to hang out!!
