Anand Ashram
As part of Shyam's Landmark Education's 'Self Expression and Leadership Program' (SELP), i and some of my colleagues and friends, got a wonderful opportunity to contribute to society. Shyam had narrowed down on an 'Old Age' home by the name 'Anand Ashram' on Bannergatta Road very close to IBM's Subramanyam Arcade office. A mail was circulated in IBM's On Demand Community about our intent. We got a good response from there and as a result we now had some company too!! I think all it takes is to take the plunge and start and as you walk the road you always get company. In Hindi, there is as popular saying which says that 'Uoon toh niklay thay hum akele, magar loog mitle gaye aur kaafila banta gaya'.
On 25th May we went to Anand Ashram for the first time. To my suprise Anand Ashram was on Bannergatta Main road, just besides the IBM campus, the very same road which i traversed for three months during my training at IBM. And the irony was that i was not even aware of the existence of Anand Ashram. I felt how we as human beings have become insensitive towards other human beings and don't even care or bother about the existence of others.
Anyways, we went inside and met Dinsha who gave us a brochure to read as waited for ours friends and colleagues to arrive. Subhashini, Avinash and Prakash Kamath joined us that afternoon. The same afternoon we went to meet the elderly people living in the Ashram. We were also informed that the place also had few kids who stayed and studied there. Meeting the elderly people was an amazing experience. Their experiences and stories were amazing. We all were really excited, they all looked happy and the Ashram Management and Staff took good care of them. All of them were quite satisfied with the Ashram and its amenities. That afternoon we resolved to come back next weekend and speak and spend some more time with 'Our' elderly people.
Well, next Sunday we were all there again, all excited and charged up. Shyam was accompanied by his 'Better Half', i mean his wife,Lakshmi and Jyoti . I reached the place on my new Pulsar, and the drive was really a good one. How I wish that i each day in Bangalore be a Sunday Morning!!! We decided to hold a cultural event on 15th June, and as we met 'Our' elders there, we discussed about the event with them. Most of the elders seemed quite excited and willing to participate. This was a big morale booster for all us, as the elders were so enthusiastic about it, especially given the fact that even the younger generation nowadays is not very much interested and these elders of ours were as excited as children are. Seeing their enthusiasm I can definitely say for sure that age is not a barrier at all, what one should have is the 'Will'.
The same week we also came up with the idea of building website for Anand Ashram, and we decided to speak about the website with the secretary of the Ashram, Mr.N S Srimantharajan. My roommate, Shashi (Sassy Boy) promised to help us set up the website.
Well, the next week, I had my 'Landmark Forum' and could not make it to the Ashram. However i was updated by Shyam on how we planned for the D-Day. We all were really excited and were eagerly looking forward to 15th June. What happened on 15th in the next post...
